Film Club - Thelma

In the 2024 film Thelma, directed by Josh Margolin, 93-year-old Thelma Post, portrayed by June Squibb, finds herself the victim of a phone scam where a fraudster poses as her grandson, Danny. After unwittingly sending $10,000 to the con artist, Thelma, frustrated by the lack of support from law enforcement and her family, embarks on a mission to reclaim her money. Joined by her old friend Ben, played by Richard Roundtree in his final role, they navigate the city on his scooter, mixing humor with moments of genuine emotional weight. The film cleverly blends action with comedy, positioning Thelma as an unlikely yet determined hero, highlighting themes of aging and agency. As she confronts both the scam artists and her family’s perception of her abilities, Thelma showcases her grit and resilience, ultimately finding empowerment and a deeper connection with those around her.
